Steven grew up in a family of five – his Mom, his aunt, himself, and his two siblings. He was born in the Kiziba refugee camp after his family fled ethnic conflict in their home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Life was not easy at all in the refugee camp. Access to healthcare was very limited. Infant mortality was high. There weren’t enough schools for the number of children in the camp. But they managed to get by; and Steven dreamed of one day building a brighter future for himself and his family. He recognized that education was absolutely critical for making his dream a reality.

Steven attends the Kigali Independent University, where he is studying Law. His dream is to become a strong and effective leader who can identify issues, analyze the root causes of those issues, then work to address those root causes in ways that bring about meaningful change. He doesn’t want anyone to experience what he experienced growing up as a refugee.

In addition to his studies, Steven is active in his church. He is passionate about creating a culture of peace and harmony among people.
