Serge was born and raised in Kigali, Rwanda and is the second child in a family of three children. Due to his family’s financial issues when he was young, Serge wasn’t able to attend nursery school. He finally started primary school at age 7. Growing up, it was a challenge for Serge to afford school fees and food as his father was the sole income earner in his family. When he wasn’t in school, Serge spent Saturdays playing soccer with his peers in and around neighboring villages. Eventually, Serge and his family moved from Kigali to the Northern Province, which has had a positive impact on his family’s daily life. With a lower cost of living than in Kigali, Serge’s father was better able to support his family. Because of this, Serge was able to complete secondary school. 

Now, Serge attends Muhabura Integrated Polytechnic College, studying Engineering Technology. Serge’s dream is to become a Civil Engineer. Serge chose this course of study as he has a background in construction, studying Masonry in secondary school. He has been passionate about construction since he was a child. Serge dreams of being able to build his parents a house. He also hopes to use his degree to educate his community on the importance of sanitation and well-constructed latrines. Serge also wants to improve his community through new road construction. Serge hopes that by becoming a civil engineer he can participate in the development of his country and the larger region. 

Outside of school, Serge is active with a volunteer music group. Their group helps encourage youth to pursue their talents. Serge feels music is a great way to help young people come together, socializing and sharing ideas through concerts and seminars.
