Alex grew up in the eastern province of Rwanda. He grew up with his mother, as his parents were not living together. Growing up, Alex’s mother struggled to provide for him as she did not have a job. At times, Alex felt like his future had no hope or direction. In his village, almost everyone practices small-scale subsistence farming. In Alex’s community, many families struggle to access education, food, clean water, and medical facilities. Many of the younger children drop out of school because it is difficult to afford school fees. Alex has also watched many of his peers affected by teen pregnancy and addiction. Eventually, Alex was able to study well in high school. Alex’s vision was to pursue higher education and work to help the children in his community access education. 

Now, Alex attends the Adventist University of Central Africa, studying Business Management. Alex believes education is one thing no one can take away from you. He hopes the knowledge and skills he gains will enable him to start a business and, in turn, employ youth in his community. He believes a university education will also help him to have a deeper understanding of how to deal with the underlying challenges that face his community, finding lasting solutions. He hopes to teach those in his community how to start their own small businesses. 

Outside of the classroom, Alex is a youth leader in his church and the president of the youth choir. He’s also involved with several clubs, such as the National Youth Volunteer Club. He also serves as the secretary for the Red Cross Club.
